Tricare Rehab Coverage for Substance Abuse
Thanks in large part to government programs such as the Affordable Care Act and private insurance companies prioritizing mental health and substance abuse treatment, access to addiction rehab has never been easier and more affordable.
One of those insurance providers is Tricare Insurance. Tricare rehab coverage is offered to those who qualify for one of the many insurance plans that Tricare offers.

It is important to note that not every member of the armed forces is eligible for Tricare benefits. Check your DEERS eligibility to find out if you are eligible and what benefits you have.
Tricare Drug Rehab
For those suffering from drug addiction, Tricare covers treatment for a variety of prescription and non-prescription medications including:
- Opioids
- Stimulants
- Prescription drugs
- Meth
- Heroin
- Cocaine
- Benzos
To find out what coverage you have as it pertains to your drug addiction, reach out to your Tricare insurance representative. You can also fill out our insurance verification form. We will go over your policy and let you know what is and isn’t covered before you begin treatment for your drug addiction.
Tricare Alcohol Rehab Coverage
Since alcohol is a substance of abuse, if you are suffering from an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) your Tricare insurance plan will cover treatment including:
- Detox
- Treatment (Inpatient, Outpatient, Partial Hospitalization)
- Therapy (Individual, Group, Family, Psychotherapy)
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
While most Tricare plans cover alcohol rehab in some form, the amount covered will depend largely on the plan you have. To find out to what extent your alcohol rehab treatment will be covered, you can reach out to your insurance representative or contact us directly. We will go over your policy and let you know what is and isn’t covered.
Additionally, should you be responsible for any sort of co-pays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses, we will let you know about that!
Treatment Programs That Tricare Covers
Tricare wants to make sure that those in need of addiction treatment can get the help that they need from start to finish. That’s why many Tricare insurance plans cover a variety of treatment programs.
Detox is the crucial first step in the addiction recovery process. Detoxing is done to rid the body of all the harmful, illicit substances that are in it so the healing process can begin.
Detoxing is often accompanied by uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. These withdrawal symptoms can even be dangerous when not properly monitored. That’s why detoxing should always be done under the care and supervision of trained medical professionals as part of a medical detox program.
Tricare understands the importance of detox, which is why they cover detox as part of a variety of treatment programs.
Inpatient rehab provides a safe environment to get the help you need with treatment without any of the distractions or temptations that come with daily life. During inpatient rehab, you live at the facility for the duration of your treatment.
Your Tricare plan may cover some or all inpatient treatment based on the following:
- You have been formally diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder
- You suffer from severe symptoms that would warrant inpatient treatment being required
- Your symptoms require you to be under round-the-clock care and supervision
Unfortunately, many who serve or have served in the military suffer from more than just substance abuse and addiction. Often their substance use disorders are brought on by mental health conditions that they turned to drugs and alcohol to try and treat as a form of self-medication. When someone is suffering from a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time it is known as a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis.
As the official health care program of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System, Tricare understands that its clients need access not just to addiction treatment but mental health treatment and therapy.
Many Tricare insurance plans cover a variety of different addiction therapy options including:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
- Individual Therapy
- Group Therapy
- Family Therapy
- Trauma Therapy
If you are unsure if your Tricare plan covers any of the above therapies, you can reach out to your insurance representative, check your DEERS, or you can reach out to us at Bayview Recovery. We will take a look at your insurance plan and let you know what is and isn’t covered. We’ll also let you know of any out-of-pocket expenses you may be responsible for before you start treatment.
